"America Ferrera is Still Pinching Herself Over 'Barbie' Oscar Nomination, Expresses Deep Disappointment Over Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie Being Snubbed"

On Tuesday morning, when the Oscar nominations were revealed, I was just chilling in bed, watching on my phone. My husband was doing the school run with the kids. There was a moment of doubt, like, did I dream this up? Then my phone started going nuts, so I figured it was real.

The whole thing about getting my first Academy Award nomination for playing Gloria in "Barbie" has been crazy. I haven't fully processed it yet. I'm still stuck on the surface of "I can't believe this is real," you know?

First, my publicist reached out, and then my husband called. He was yelling and emotional. I could hear the kids in the background, all confused, like, "Why is Dad screaming?" It was pretty funny.

Next up, my "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" buddies - Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel - FaceTimed me as a group. It was a mix of hilarious, emotional, and just wonderful to be celebrated by my sisters. We've grown up together in this industry, supporting and cheering each other on. They're amazing, a real gift in my life.

Since the "Barbie" crew is scattered worldwide, we've been texting congrats to each other. The outpouring of love and support is overwhelming. I feel it so deeply and am incredibly grateful for their love, especially at this moment. It's been a long journey with "Barbie," not just for me but for Greta, Margot, and Noah. It's been years, and everyone's thrilled we get to end this journey at the biggest party of the year.

Besides my nomination, "Barbie" also got nods for best picture, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), adapted screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), costume design, production design, and original songs ("I'm Just Ken" and "What Was I Made For?"). But there were two glaring omissions: Greta Gerwig for best director and Margot Robbie for best actress.

I was really disappointed they didn't make the cut. Greta deserves it. She built this world, turned something not everyone cared about into a global phenomenon. It's disheartening not to see her on that list.

As for Margot, who got a best picture nomination for producing "Barbie," her acting was mind-blowing. She makes it all look so easy, but she's a magician on screen. Witnessing her incredible performance was one of the highlights of my career. She brings heart, humor, depth, joy, and fun to the character. In my book, she's a master.

On a positive note, "Barbie" made history as one of three films directed by women to earn a best picture nod. It's a step in the right direction. Women filmmakers telling diverse stories is the goal. I'd love to see more female-directed movies on the list and more recognition for female directors making the best cinema of the year.

I'm also thrilled with the diversity in the acting races. A Latina, two Black women (Danielle Brooks and Da'Vine Joy Randolph), and Jodie Foster, a gay woman playing a gay character, all getting acknowledged. It's great to see a range of women in the supporting actress category and exciting that Lily Gladstone made it to the Best Actress category. We should be enjoying the work of all kinds of artists, and this year's nominations show that opportunities exist for women of color to shine in the best filmmaking of the year.
